Mgt: He may a viral illness causing both symptoms, but I would recommend that he be seen to evaluate. Does he have any history of serious infections? strep or staph infection?

Allergy vs infected: Itchy red eyes indicate one of two conditions: allergies or infection. In a 2 yr old, an eye infection should be treated by a Dr. On examination, they will be able to determine whether it is an allergic reaction or an infection. They can prescribe antibiotic drops to eradicate the infection, or allergy drops to address the allergies. Keep an eye out for swelling around the eye.

Hard to tell: Proper assessment will require some history, an exam & possibly lab work. This could be as simple as a transient virus or a more worrisome auto-immune disorder. I would have this evaluated by the child's physician when you can arrange it. If the kid is taking fluids well & playful at least part of the time it can wait until office hours. If the kid is not, start with an urgent care center.

If doubts about her health, go to the doctor.
