Persistence of the embryonic urachus may pull the umbilicus in deep. The hairs have tiny barbs which make them stick deeply into the umbilicus where they are irritating.

Fungal: It could be a fungal infection as this area gets moist with sweat and is therefore a haven for fungal infections. You can get something prescribed for this if this is what it is. Try to keep area dry - ex wear loose undershorts alone when home etc. powder may also help in the area to help keep it dry.

Navel Rash: It could be a belt buckle rash? Or simply b/c of your jeans (the nickel part where the button is to close it)?  Treatment is with prescription cortisone like vanos or clobex.

Rash: The commonest cause of a localized rash would be an allergic reaction to something that has been coming in direct contact with the skin. Associated itching is common in contact dermatitis. Try to identify some clothing that could be the culprit. Ask your pharmacist to recommend a nonprescription cortisone type ointment to apply. If no improvement,consult a dermatologist

Infection?: You may be describing a surgical site infection of your umbilical port site.  It may also be a reaction to the tapes that were on your skin until recently.

I would discuss it with your surgeon and give him/her a chance to see you and the rash you are talking about in person.
