Same as smoking: Both give you nicotine addiction, as well as being an "oral habit" - the need to have something in your mouth. Cold turkey works for about 3% of people, adding nicotine replacement therapy (patches, gum, lozenges etc) increases quit rates to about 10-15%, adding a smoking cessation program increases to about 20%. The prescription drugs Zyban (bupropion) and Chantix, together with a program are 30-40% success.

Get him sick on it: If he consumes so much that he gets extremely sick his brain and body will associate the chewing tobacco with the feeling of nausea and wanting to vomit. That feeling is very uncomfortable and can lead to cessation.

how long does it take for nicotine from chewing tobacco to be completely flushed from your system so that it cannot be detected? i need to take a nicotine test for a job and i need to know how far in advance i need to quit the stuff.

It : It depends on whether the nicotine test is a urine test, blood test or hair follicle test and how much you smoke.  For most people, a urine test takes 2-4 days to be clear, a blood test takes 7-10 days and a hair follicle test takes much longer, but is not usually used due to expense.  If you are a heavy smoker, it may take longer for the nicotine to clear from your system (up to a week for the urine test and a couple weeks for the blood test).  Smoking menthol cigarettes may also cause the test to remain positive longer than regular cigarettes or chewing tobacco.  Of course, the sooner you quit, the better it is for your health. If : If you are active duty in the usmc, you can get treatment at your military treatment center (mtf). Please look into  the smoking cessation clinic (often under the wellness clinic) at your mtf, where you normally can get education about the issue, group treatment and appropriate medications to help you stop nicotine use.  Good luck.
