No: Lutein (which you can only get into your system through your diet) is a carotenoid, but unlike beta carotene, does not convert to vitamin a in the body.  Zeaxanthin and lutein are the only carotenoids known to concentrate specifically in the eye.  They are believed to help filter damaging light and prevent free radical damage to the delicate structures in the back of the eye.

Depends: Acute toxicity occurs when adults take more than 20-100 times the rda ( recommended daily amount) of vitamin a over a period of hours or a few days.  This clears in days. This is less of a problem than is chronic toxicity from preformed vitamin a. Chronic toxicity results from the taking high amounts of preformed vitamin a for months or years of &gt; 25, 000 iu can lead to permanent health problems.

A is fat soluble so: It could stay around for awhile.  In either case it would be best to take a little extra on a regular basis, than to try to "top off" on some random schedule.  You either have adequate intake of vit d and sunlight or you need some.
