Heat: In my experience, heat is better for muscular injuries and ice for joint injuries. Massage after heat applied as the muscle is more relaxed.

Timing is everything: Acutely rice, rest, ice , compression, elevation. All of these help shrink blood vessels and decrease the amount of blood supply and inflammation.
After 24-48 hours heat may be used to stimulate blood flow and loosen the muscle, controlled exercise, then ice to control inflammation.
Chronic you may use either heat to relax and ice for swelling and pain.

Topical salicylate: Topical salicylates such as BenGay can help with pain from sore muscles.  It has nothing to do with heat.

Heel lift can take off tension and ease pain

Avoid massage initially.

After 1-2 weeks can start mild stretching program. May take unto 6 weeks to heal.

Duration: Leg spasms tend to resolve quickly vs a "pulled" muscle or strain that tend to take quite a bit of time to heal.  The length of healing depends on the severity of the strain.
