what can a psychologist do that a psychiatrist can't?

Therapy vs meds: Speaking very generally, most psychologists hold either a PhD or a PsyD degree (I hold both) and practice psychotherapy. Psychiatrists hold either an MD or a DO degree, and they prescribe psychotropic medications, and generally do not do all that much therapy these days, but years ago psychiatrists would do both.

if i want to change behavior, why can't i get insurance to cover psychologist and not just psychiatrist or drugs?

Do it anyway!: That's unfortunate! but, here's what i think:  do not let insurance companies dictate how to take care of yourself; if u feel that talking to someone (as in being in therapy) is what u need to do, then do so.  Many therapists have a sliding scale or different payment options; u could arrange to meet with them weekly or every other week. It is your life! take charge. (+it's more private!).

are there people that are both psychologists and psychiatrists? i need the expertise of both and don't like the idea of seeing two people.

Depends why : You can get away with seeing one of them depending upon the nature of your problems.  Psychiatrist usually focus on drug therapy while psychologist use counselling and behavioral therapies. Again it will depend on why you need to see one of them. For example, psychosis or depression usually must be treated with drugs while personality problems can at least initially be tackled with behavioral.

Training, experience: Psychiatrists are physicians who have graduated from 4 years of medical school with an md or do degree; they then serve 4 year residencies that cover general medical services plus psychiatry in training.  Psychologists enter professional training programs after college; a master's level requires 2 years' graduate work.  A phd level generally requires 3-5 years' graduate study & a dissertation.

Yes: Psychiatrist have to attend 4 years of medical school, 3- 4 years of a residency and often an additiona  2 years of a fellowship like one in child and adolescent psychiatry.  They can function as a person with expertise in medicine and get training in psychology/therapy also .  They can use meds and can treat medical-psych. Disorders due to medical trng.  Educ- psych. 22 ed yrs vs. Psycho- 9 yrs.

Type of training: Psychiatrists are medical doctors, which means that, after undergraduate training, they go to med school for 4 yrs or more, then train another 4-5 years in psychiatry (more for child & adolescent psychiatry.  Psychologists have about 4 years after undergraduate, then do an internship & postdoctoral training for 2-3 years.  Much overlap, but psychiatrists prescribe mediations; pscyhogists test.

Doc's: Psychiatrist finished medical school & obtained md degree. Psychologist finished training & received phd degree, can diagnose illnesses but cannot prescribe medications, while md can.

I hope not!!!: I would like to believe that would never happen. Could it happen? Of course yes but I don't know of any.They are human too. If you need help, don't be afraid to go to one. Your primary physician may help to choose a compassionate doctor he or she is familiar with

Psychologist : Psychiatrists can prescribe medications, psychologists cannot. These days psychiatrists very rarely do therapy, albeit some still do. Most therapy is performed these days by psychologists.
