Unlike prescription SSRIs, which keep serotonin active once it's released, psilocybin directly activates receptors for 3-6 hours before being metabolized. It is not an antidepressant. Illicit use of psilocybin has significant risks including panic or psychotic episodes. It's also illegal.

At this point, we have not identified true risk/ benefit ratios, ideal doses, the specific indications for mescaline, psilocybin, lysergic acid.  Best to wait prior to experimenting as cardiac risks unclear.

Question?: Hallucinogins have shown promise in treatment of depression, PTST, and addiction. One problem is very few studies done because of onerous DEA rules for research. Bigger problem is self medication. Safe treatment with any psychoactive substance requires professional supervision. LSD has caused some serious mental side effects in the past.
