Should get checked: It is not normal. First, by seeing a doctor you could confirm that where you are experiencing the pain does suggest that the prostate is the likely problem.  Ejaculation shouldn't cause prostatitis, but if the pain IS coming from your prostate, then inflammation or infection are probable causes. Your doctor can culture prostate secretions leading to an effective antibiotic treatment. Good wishes:)

Prostatitis: Sounds like prostatitis, which is inflammation of the prostate.  This can be caused by infection, though patients who sit for long, continuous periods of time may also develop symptoms.  Best to see a urologist, who can do a urinalysis to ensure no infection is present. A digital exam of the prostate with prostate massage can also be done to look for infection.  NSAIDS/sitz baths can be helpful

No: With adequate lubricant, using KY jelly a prostate examination should not be painful or cause infection. ( Unless the prostate was already inflamed). A anal fissure (small tear) may cause pain on examination. Consider using a stool softener for a few days &amp; see your physician.

Many patients have anxiety before their first prostate exam.  Typically, prostate exams are uncomfortable but not painful.  You will experience pressure and may feel the urge to defecate (move your bowels).  If you already have inflammation or irritation in the anal area or a very small anal opening, you may experience some pain.  I have been a practicing family physician since 1999, and would say approximately 5-10% of my patients experience any pain on examination.

You can help make it less uncomfortable by relaxing your buttocks as much as possible.  "clenching" tends to make the examination more difficult and can tighten the muscle around the anal opening.

Since prostate cancer screening typically starts at age 50 at this time (unless you have risk factors for prostate cancer or other symptoms) many 40 year old men don't need a rectal exam.

Unlikely: It is unlikely that a digital rectal examination would injure the prostate or precipitate prostate inflammation.

Rectal exams: Massage of the prostate by a finger in the anus is never comfortable and often creates significant discomfort.  This may be interpreted as pain by the person being examined, but may not necessarily represent disease.  The experienced examiner can usually tell what is meaningful and what is a normal reaction to the insult.  Without knowing your pcp i cannot really comment on how accurate they are.
