at what age is it safe to give a child his her water?

Accepted Answer

Ask your peds: Usually once they start having baby food, about 2-3 meals a day, they can have some between 2-4 ounces per day. This usually happens at about 5-6 months. ITs important to note that formula and breast milk has lots of water already in it. Baby food esp. fruit based, will have water as well.

1/4 teaspoon: The standard amount is 1/4 teaspoon per 4 ounces of water. If he/she drank a little of that it would not hurt them.

whats the deal with flouride? why do water bottles made "safe" for young children now say "with natural flouride?" arent we supposed to keep them flouride "free?"

Fluoride helps teeth: Fluoride in excessive amounts is not healthy, but in proper levels will build stronger teeth for kids of any age. While distilled water has none, most natural waters & city water supplies have the proper amount.

bottled water safety; are the plastic bottles safe for kids to drink from?

Accepted Answer

Safe? yes needed? no: Plastic bottles from deer park or aquafina are fine for single use. However, there is nothing inherently safer about bottled water that you can't get from your tap. Especially if  you have a refrigerator filter or a faucet filter like brita. It's much more economical for you and the environment to have a special stainless steel thermos they can use, or bpa free plastic one.

my child is 10 months old, is it safe for him to drink regular tap water?

Not recommended: Check with your local water utility. If your tap water is fluoridated or has substantial natural Fluoride (0.7 mg/l or higher), consider using a low-fluoride alternative water source.
The american dental association recommends not using water that contains high levels of Fluoride when mixing powdered or concentrated baby formula. Too much Fluoride puts your baby at risk for enamel fluorosis.

is it safe for my 8 year old son to drink propel water? he only drinks 1 bottle a day at school?

: Safe=maybe, advised, no. I find regular water without all the chemical additives to be a better source or hydration at any age. I would not encourage its use.

i have always given my 3 & 2 years old kids nestle bottled water . do plastic chemicals get into such water? is it safe?

Accepted Answer

Yes: It is safe to drink the water.  Everything in life involves risks versus benefits. Even if they could measure femtogram amounts of plastic in the water then the question becomes how much of it would be absorbed by your children.  I don't know about the water supply where you actually live but keep checking on it.

so my dad only filled his pool only half way. the pool water is not filtered. so the water is stagnant. he is however cleaning the sides with a rag and testing and using chemicals. is the water safe children to play in? bacteria? unfiltered 6 wks?

: Needs proper testing of pH etc and chlorine added. May be better to drain clean and refill and readjust but perhosp your

all i want to know is my child safe from brain eating amoeba going down inflatable water slide in to pool. water getting in face. my tap water measures good for total chlorine?

: That is not the scenario for concern. Brain eating amebae are found in fresh water ponds,lakes,rivers, hot springs and soil. In any event, teach your child to pinch his/her nose when sliding into water.
