recently diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and proctitis no diarrhea, frequently passing blood and mucus. since diagnosis, been experiencing decreased urine output and left side back pain. testsshows gfr 80, creatine & albumin, urine sample normal. ?

Hydration: Your GFR is at lower than desired but not too low. For now try to increase your intake of water. Drink enough water daily so that your urine is mostly colorless. At the next opportunity you may repeat your creatinine and GFR.

: Unlikely. Proctitis may cause tenesmus but does not cause diarrhea. If your symptoms persist, it would be prudent to see a doctor.

Typical IBS symptoms: As you suspect, these symptoms indeed are consistent with irritable bowel syndrome. But they aren't particularly suggestive of proctitis (inflmmation of the rectum). Inflammatory bowel disease (e.g. Crohn's disease) can cause similar symptoms as IBS, and also can cause proctitis.  So I suggest you raise these questions with the doctor who diagnosed IBS then follow her advice. Good luck!

: Inflammatory bowel disease is strongly suspected, the endoscopic results are more consistent with Crohn than ulcerative colitis.

: Yes, you could still have proctitis or colitis. Keep the colonoscoopy appointment.

Proctitis: Proctitis is a general term referring to rectal inflammation - it can come from many differnt causes including viral or bacterial infection or thebody attacking itself in an autoimmune disease

a biopsy can give a better idea of the cause and then the treatment can be directed more carefully.

Not yet: Give it a few days. A viral intestinal tract infection or mild food poisoning will resolve on their own. Eat a soft, bland diet with no harsh roughage and drink adequate fluids. Use kaopectate or Imodium as needed. If symptoms persist or worsen a stool culture to check for pathogens is recommended.

What's the cause?: Not a weird question at all!  "plugging up" diarrhea will not cure an infection, fix an inflammatory process, improve an ischemic gut, or correct a functional issue.  Medical evaluation is recommended appropriate to the duration of your symptoms, associations (bleeding, weight loss, pain, vomiting), as well as your other medical co-morbidities.  Call your doctor please and get checked.

No: May help recover from an infectious or antibiotic associated diarrhea though.  Most yohgurts have lots of artificial sweeteners and flavorings which make them of little benefit.  Some have actually been chastized by the fda for making unsubstantited claims.
