Old term: "process" schizophrenia is an old term for what we now call chronic schizophrenia. Typical onset is late teens to early 20's, but evidence suggests the process may start much earlier.  There are both positive (hallucinations & delusions) and negative (social withdrawaal, lack of motivation) symptoms.  Medications, supportive therapy, and family work can help improve quality of life.

No cure: "process" schizophrenia is an older term for what we now think of as chronic schizophrenia.  Although a variety to interventions, including medications, supportive therapy, and family work, can greatly improve quality of life and markedly reduce symptoms, we do not have a true cure of the illness, nor do we seem to be close to finding one.  It tends to wax and wane & treatment adherence is key.

Some appear shy: If a child has enough symptoms to be diagnosed with schizophrenia, then he may appear shy because he avoids interactions with others.  The child likely has had unsuccessful interactions with people in the past, due to abnormal thinking, trouble interpreting speech and body language, incorrect emotions, delusions, hallucinations, etc...  However, shyness by itself does not suggest schizophrenia.

Adequate treatment: Schizophrenia is a highly treatable disorder much of the time.  People with the disorder who respond well to treatment are as capable as most of us of parenting. With some good help: A person with well-controlled schizophrenia should be able take care of his own children if he has help. The helper is not necessarily to help do the child care, but also to help monitor the status of the schizophrenic, because the schizophrenic may not be aware of his symptoms gradually returning, if the symptoms were to return. These situations are best judged on a case-by-case basis.

Any credible suicide threat should be considered an urgent  problem, and you should consult your doctor immediately..

Evaluate now!: If you are even remotely considering the possibility of schizophrenia, then this child warrants a thorough eval by a mental health professional specializing in children. "bipolar" is thrown around much too casually these days; many "normal" kids may exhibit extreme reactions, including anger, &not have pathology. Determining the difference btwn developmental  & ominous conditions, takes an expert.
