Gas: Air or gas in the G.I. tract gets into the G.I. tract through the  mouth. Air is swallowed in the food and liquids we drink. Certain foods such as beans and cabbage will generate air in the breakdown process. Carbonated beverages add lots of air to our G.I. tract.

Multiple: The possibilities include just "normal" gas.  Gas can be caused by foods with a lot of insoluble fiber (roughage), or by lactose intolerance.  Also excessively greasy foods can cause gas as well. Rarely, there are abnormal twists (volvulus) of the sigmoid colon which can cause bloating.  Lastly, cancerous growths can cause a blockage and bloating of the colon.  See your doctor.

Need more info..: I would need more medical history. How was the condition diagnised? What were the colonoscooy or x-ray findings? Has there been past surgery or injury? Postoperative scarring from prior surgery can occur but often does not affect the left colon. Diverticulitis can can scarring and colon blockage, but unusual at age 39.

Anatomy?: The transverse colon is riding roughly horizontally on top of the abdomen and the distal part is the part which is closest to the part when the colon descends to become the descending colon.   Just curious as to why you are asking this question since the info is readily available in the internet.

What's gone is...: Gone, but can function quite well with what's left. Colon is about 5-6 feet long. Can do well with the remaining amount. Any surgery can cause internal scars (adhesions), which could cause obstructive issues in the future (or not).

Depends: Some patients may respond to a bile-acid binder such as cholestyramine, immodium or changes in diet.  Best to be seen by a gi.
