At age 37, periods are sometimes delayed, so if no period occurs, wait another week or two and obtain a serum HCG test for certainty.

They can detect a pregnancy 7-10 days after conception. The best time to take one is when you miss your period.  The vaginal spotting would need instigation only if it continues.

Brownish or darker: blood generally means that it is old(er) blood -- in your case meaning it may have stayed in your uterus a day or two longer than it should.  When in doubt check pregnancy test twice 1 week apart.  If this continues and you have discharge afterwards, cramping, vaginal itching then go get yourself tested for vaginal infection.
