Glucose test: If your wife has not been told by her doctor that the blood sugars are OK she needs to call her/him to find out.

If it turns out she has diabetes and is pregnant she can still have the baby with careful control of diabetes.

1 tube: They only need one tube to test the glucose level. There are 7-10 cc's in a tube, that's less than 2 teaspoons. Sometimes doctors do an additional test during that same draw, like a cbc, and they need a second tube for that.

Depends: If you did the one-hour test, it means you need to do the definitive 3 hour test. If it was one elevation on the 3 hour test, then you are not a gestational diabetic (unless your one was a really elevated fasting glucose). It is a good idea to watch your diet and carbs if you had one elevation tho.

Gestational diabetes: Gestational diabetes is diabetes that didn't exist before the pregnancy and goes away after the high hormone levels of pregnancy fall back to normal after delivery.This requires repeat testing at about the time of your 6 week post-partum check-up to know for sure.It does increase the risk of developing diabetes later in life so it's a good idea to watch your diet and weight let your doctors know.

Normal: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, your results are within the normal limit. The one hour level is at the borderline. See this site for more info.

Hemoglobin A1C: If the test you are referring to is your daughter's hemoglobin a1c level, then your daughter is part of the growing epidemic of children with diabetes. Her asthma may well be due to her obesity. First, you need the results of more tests, because one single test could have an erroneous result. Either way, if your daughter is overweight, the sooner you and she get educated about food the better.

OK for now: Your husband's glucose is normal (i assume it was a lab test out of a vein rather than a finger stick) but he's overweight and that makes him more likely to develop diabetes in the future (along with high BP and cholesterol) pacticularly if he has a positive family history. Diet and exercise could lower his risks.

Glucose test: If the blood was drawn and sat around too long at room temp without separation of plasma from cells, the white blood cells in the blood will metabolize the glucose (glycolysis) and lower the glucose value.

Accepted Answer

Large for gestationa: The mother has a large for gestational age infant. This is sometimes due to gestational diabetes. At times it is because of maternal overweight or the development of gestational diabetes in the future pregnancies. Even if the mother has normal fasting glucose, she should have glucose tolerance test and hemoglobin A1c to confirm that she does not have type 2 or gestatational diabetes.
