can i try 3-4 tums (calcium carbonate) for severe leg cramps while on prednisone?  i do take multivitamin & a magnesium, zinc, calcium supplement.  have oa. any harm?

Possibly: TUMs (calcium carbonate) may affect the absorption of other medications. Also if they have calcium in them you do not want to go above 1,500 mg of calcium a day because of the risk of kidney stones. Also you said you have OA and we typically do not use Prednisone for that condition.  Please make certain of your diagnosis

i'm on prednisone for sinus infection. i have a leg cramp from work. safe to take aleve (naproxen) for pain on this medication?

Let your doctor know: and see what they say and have it recorded in your chart. Usually it's safe, But your doctor knows your history, other medications, medical conditions, things that would make a better decision if s/he knew about it first to then advise you on it now.

Common side effects: Unfortunately, those are all common side effects of steroids, especially if you are on high doses and/or taking it for an extended period of time.  Taking it as early in the day as possible may help with the insomnia. Have your potassium checked if you continue having cramps, as steroids can deplete potassium. The sweating....Check w/your dr...Maybe decrease dose, alternating days if possible.....

i had prolonged, massive vomiting for hours. im having leg cramps so im guessing its electrolytes. what can i do for this?

Drink: some Gatorade/ Powerade or Pedialyte, or natural coconut water.  Those have the most consistent concentration of potassium (and sodium/ chloride) that you need to rehydrate.  You can also go for some grapefruits ,oranges, bananas and other fruits with potassium.   Keep drinking water, 1 L every hour while you have diarrhea and vomiting.  Cramps don't always mean electrolytes, they could mean water

can swelling on back of knee cause leg cramps or are the two unrelated? i wasnt sure if theres a nerve in back of knee or not. it cramps when not swollen too though. thank you.

whats the difference between muscle(leg) cramps and actual pain? does leg cramps last only short periods in comparison? mine come and go. it lasts for few mins at a time and happens mostly in bed. thanks .

Cramps: You are having cramps.  Common to come on at night and last a few minutes as you describe.  Cramps are a result of muscles that depolarize and contract.  Causes for this are for this are often associated with potassium, calcium or magnesium problems.

: Cramps could be for various reasons: including imbalance of body minerals like calcium, magnesium and sodium movement in muscle action. It may be because of activities without resting the muscles. It may be due to nerve irritation. The minerals lost in sweat, diarrhea or vomiting if not replaced appropriately may cause the mineral imbalance. Seek medical evaluation if it persists.
