YES: H-2 BLOCKERS   EG: PEPCID AC  (OTC)
and CARAFATE (sucralfate)....ask your Pharmacist for examples!

Age mismatch : Profile indicates your are 50, which suggests you've been taking ppi for at least 37 years. To the best of my knowledge ppi's were not available 37 years ago.The more important question is why do you have gerd.

No: Although there is a lot of talk about iron absorption while on PPIs on the Internet, the practical aspect of it is that the effect of PPI's on this is very minimal. There is no reason to take extra iron supplements. If you need to be on PPI's for years, it might be reasonable to check a blood count every year or so. Otherwise, you are unlikely to have problems. In my: Experience, ppi's work better.  What is more important, however, is underlying cause that needs to be addressed.  Consult with your doctor or GI specialist.

Mostly yes...: Head to head - ppi has a more profound effect on your gastric ph and prolonged and/ or higher doses are associated with poor bone health and other issues.  Long term acid suppression should be avoided if possible.  Dietary and behavior changes can improve gerd for most with medication used for break thru sx.  Bottom line - you need to discuss your situation with a doc to be safe.

i have switched after using ppi for gerd for over 4 years to tums (calcium carbonate) (3000mg daily) since 2 months and do not feel any difference/ is it ok to continue?

Go with ppi: I know of no role for melatonin as treatment for reflux made worse by hiatal hernia. Melatonin is a sleep aid. Ppis are proton pump inhibitors and reduce acid production in stomach at the source - helping to relieve reflux issues common with hiatal hernia.

weaning of prilosec caused me many stomach polyps any thing i can take other than a ppi for gerd?

Yes, many antacids a: There are many antacid medicines available for GERD.
Besides PPIs, there are H2- blockers like Cimetidine/ Ranitidine and Famotidine(Pepcid (famotidine)). Pepcid (famotidine) is the next best medicine to stop acid production in your stomach. it is available as a prescription as well as over the counter.  Take one tablet daily at bedtime. if the symptoms recur during the day/evening, take it twice(12 hours apart) daily.

sm hh found after ct scan i have light chest pain after i eat should i have heart ruled out had ekg or does this explain chest pain on ppi for gerds

An EKG : An ekg might be a good idea, hh can cause a discomfort, but  so can heart issues especially if there is a family history. Might also need a stress test.

after 4 years of 80 mg a day of ppi's for gerd, gastritis, esophagitis, barrett's - my egd shows barrett's progressed to long segment and other conditions still active. i have large hiatal hernia. should i seek surgical consult? waiting on pathology?

: I would discuss with your Dr about putting the head of your bed on 4-8 inch blocks to see if it cures your problem.  Gravity never sleeps. ;-)

If your BMI is greater than 25 work on getting it to 25.  Works better than surgery.
