Two-week bouts of : depression can occur in new moms &amp; dads the 1st year after delivery. Post-partum depression in moms that starts 3-4 weeks after delivery &amp; persists &gt;2-3 mos. is likely to become chronic depression. Harvard psychiatrists reviewed studies on PPD from 1985-2012, many of which show that its persistence indicates a pre-existing depressive disorder. It needs to be treated for parents' &amp; babies' sakes.

It might: If you and your wife recently had a baby than depending on the time passed, it could be either baby blues or post-partum depression. Encourage your wife to get evaluated (you can get a referral from her obgyn or  child's pediatrician), be supportive, share chores to decrease feelings of being overwhelmed. Eval and treatment are necessary for the well-being of your family, your wife and your baby.

Need full eval: post partum depression is considered if sx within a yr after birth, I suggest a good eval, could begin with PCP may refer to psychiatry, good rx available , want to get optimal support for you to provide everything your baby needs . No reason to delay! best Wishes

Psychotherapy: Medication alone is not optimal treatment for anxiety.  See a psychologist for psychotherapy (ongoing, at least weekly) to understand and address the cause(s) of your anxiety (not just the symptom).  With good psychotherapy, you may need less medication or none at all.  Sometimes talk is the best medicine.

Yes: Sometimes Plan B does not work in all instances to prevent pregnancy after contraceptive failures.

Yes: Very likely.  You need to be under the care of a gyn specialist that is comfortable treating this problem.  In addition to treatment, HCG levels are followed very closely.

my tsh level is 0.01, t3 is 134 and free t4 is 1.3. i will be retested in 3 months. what are the chances of it being graves disease or hyperthyroidism? i have no history of thyroid issues & i am 11 months postpartum. also no symptoms of anything?

Wait for retest: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, your TSH suggests hyperactivity but T4 is normal. So the it would be prudent to wait for the retest. It is not feasible to give you odds of the outcome.

No specfic tests: Routine post partum visits include weight, blood pressure, maybe a blood count, to answer questions, screen for post partum depression, pelvic exam, and discuss contraception.

how can i deal with postpartum flares?

Accepted Answer

Be patient.: Hot flushes are not unusual postpartum, especially after tubal ligation. Be reassured that they are alomst always self-limited and be patient. They should be gone by your 6-week postpartum ob/gyn visit. If they interfere with your daily activities, try Prozac (fluoxetine) or clonidine, after talking with your doctor. Rarely this is permanent and seen in sheehan's syndrome.

should i be concerned if i have post-partum bleeding?

No: After a delivery, either c-section or vaginal birth, it is normal to bleed for up to 6 weeks. Your bleeding can also go back and forth between heavy and light and you may have different sized blood clots . If you feel like you are bleeding excessively call your doctor.
