my husband has small holes in his back (about the size of a large open pore) that fill with dead skin. what is the best way to take care of them? could they be a symptom of something more serious?

: This is more of a cosmetic issue rather than a health problem. The goal is to remove excess oil and debris by a warm wash cloth followed by application of something like witch hazel which is a good astringent. A dermatologist could advise you further.

May shrink on own: If the pore was quite large as you say it may have caused some scarring. If that is the case there is little that you can do in terms of shrinking it. Give it some time though; keep the area clean and avoid further trauma at the site and it should become less noticeable.   If it continues to bother you after a few months, consider seeking out a dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

Occluded glands: We have glands all over our skin that secrete various oils that usually are deposited on the skin. If one of those glands is occluded or plugged then the secretions will collect in the cyst under the skin. That is the white stuff you can squeeze out.

Wash it daily with a Salicylic acid cleanser (not higher than 3%)and rinse it with plenty of water. Once or twice a day. Eat less sweets , oily products and sodas. Keep hair off your face, including at night and don't  allow hair products to remain on your face. Blot oil with  "rice paper" or tissue
