Adequate calories: The actual type of diet depends if there are any other medical conditions(diabetes, heart failure, high BP)- but generally the most common thing I encounter is not enough calories through the day. A variety of things may contribute to poor appetite- dry mouth, restricted diet, decreased sense of smell, inactivity, etc. Giving small meals/snacks through the day is important to get enough calories.

Obesity: Weight issues even in young children are on the rise.  Our society has a lot of cheap, easy access, calorie-dense and nutrient-poor foods available and many are marketed to children.  Did you know that the largest toy distributor is actually a fast food chain?  Give our kids real foods and avoid giving them sugar-sweetened beverages including juice.
