Yes: In general, the pleural (lining of the lungs) may become inflammed or infected with a pneumonia. The fluid that is part of the normal lubrication of the lungs may collect abnormally -- which is called an effusion. Once it is resorbed, residual pain and discomfort may be experienced for several weeks to months after the event.

Pleural effusion: It sounds like you are concerned you have a pleural effusion along with the pneumonia you were diagnosed with. A pleural effusion would have been seen on the chest xray taken if it was significant.  If it has been a while since your chest xray and you have completed a course of treatment and you are still coughing or short of breath, then please see your doctor again for re-evaluation.

Fluid collection: There is a lining that covers your lung and a lining that covers the chest wall.  There is normally a small amount of fluid in between the two.  However, when more fluid collects then it can be seen on a cxr.  Causes are many.   A ct chest can help further help evaluate the effusion and the lining of the lung.  Sometimes sampling the fluid with an ultrasound guided thoracentesis is neccessary.

Further workup: The bigger question is why a 23 year old would have persistent pleural effusions.  Further workup to determine the specific diagnosis is needed, only then can treatment options/ prognosis be known.

Fluid: A pleural effusion refers to fluid between the two very thin linings of the lung. This may develop due to heart failure,  infection, trauma, inflammatory process or tumor.

Different: Pleural effusion is fluid around the lung. Pulmonary edema is fluid in the lung itself causing infiltrates and linear densities in the lung bases as the fluid distends the pulmonary lymphatics.

: It is an abnormal finding but the importance of this finding depends on the medical history, physical examination and blood test. In general, we usually encounter this CXR in patient with atelectasis +/- pneumonia. Good luck.
