two weeks ago i noticed i had pinworms and took over the counter pinworm medication and it failed to work, i went in and saw my doctor and he prescribed me albendazole and its been more than 72 hours and it still hasnt worked, any reason for why?

: How do you know the medication is ineffective? Do you or your family member still observe the active pinworms at and around the anus at night or you only feel itching and uncomfortable? Albendazole should be effective but you will need a second dose in 2 weeks for a complete eradication.

Ask the pharmacist: At your local drug store, pyrantel is the generic used in the USA OTC, but read the labels carefully, and more importantly is to be sure that it is pinworm infestation not something else, good luck

Pin Worms: The over the counter medication for pin worms is reese's piinworm medicine, reese's pinworm tablets and pin-x.  It works by paralyzing the worms so they can't lay their eggs and are evacuated in the stool.

OTC works: The over the counter medicine works just fine.  Repeat the dose in 2 weeks to finish the job.

Pin-X: Annoying but harmless condition - this is usually what I recommend to my patients. Have to ask the pharmacist at your store about it.

USA for sure: I can only answer for the us. Pyrantel pamate has been available otc for decades under a variety of brand names. As one of the most regulated medication venues in the world, i would assume lesser regulated countries have similar products available, but I have never investigated its status elsewhere.

my daughter woke up with irritation on her vagina tonight. i looked & she has what i assume are pinworms there. i've never delt with this and i've looked it up that there's over the counter meds. but i'm also worried she has a utility as well?

Yes: Pyrantel pomate  is sold otc under various names like pin-rid , antiminth (pyrantel) and pin-x. When used as directed it has activity against several worm like paracites.The earthworm like thing was not a pin worm but likely ascaris.This product may help.A visit with your doc and some stool studies may be needed to sort out what problems you have.

Prescription: The med for pinworms used to be Mebendazole but now it is not available and Albendazole is used and a script is needed.

Accepted Answer

: Albendazole has a higher efficacy in eliminating pinworm infestation than pyrantel pamoate.  It is ideal  to have whole family get treated at the same time to prevent reinfection.
