What to expect: The most important thing after stent insertion is to continue taking both Aspirin and clopidogrel ( or equivalent) until directed to stop. Next important thing is to begin healthy diet and cholesterol control. Cardiac rehab and exercise is crucial as prescribed by your provider.  Watch for development of chest discomfort, shortness of breath or the symptoms you had  prior to stent notify  md  asap.

Possibly: It all depends on the cause of your heart failure. If it is coronary artery disease, you may need to have stents placed in order to help your heart's blood supply and also your ejection fraction (heart output). If your heart failure has another cause (uncontrolled blood pressure, cardiomyopathy, valvular disease), those need to be treated adequately to help restore its function.

Likely Yes: There are restrictions in the first 5-7 days because of the entry site (usually femoral artery).  Unless you have had recent myocardial injury (heart attack), abnormal lv function (chf), or other cardiac condition you should have no restrictions 1 week after a stent.  Check with your doc about your specific restrictions.

Support: Just be there for him and let the medical team do their work. If your brother smokes, encourage him to stop. Reinforce the importance of taking his prescribed medicines religiously. Help him exercise and eat a balanced diet.

Coronary stent: Coronary stents can not be "replaced" as such. However, they can be re-opened or restented if they renarrow , or restenose. The  injury or trauma to the vessel wall during the initial stent placement results in a healing response with scar tissue growth. With current drug-eluting stents, scar tissue growth is inhibited and renarrowing occurs in only approximately 5%.

Bad stuff: If a stent closes slowly (stenosis) or quickly (thrombosis) the net effect is the same. Reduced or complete absence of blood flow to the area that the stent is keeping open. That means that area will not get blood and infarct and die.

Stent: Coronary stent placement is done percutaneously (i.e. Through a small puncture in the groin or wrist) via an artery, and deploys a small tube/ mesh (the stent) in the blood vessels of the heart, in order to open up a blockage and keep that area open. It stays in your body indefinitely. Some stents are uncoated (bare metal), some are coated with medications in order to prevent further blockage.

Short: If the stent is placed in electively (and not for myocardial infarction), recovery is quite short.  We tell our patients not to walk a long distance, lift anything heavy, or drive a car for 2 days.  They are also instructed not to submerge the puncture site in the leg for one week.  Showers are okay.
