Re-injury: Yes, a swollen ankle could be from an old injury.  You may have developed arthritis in the ankle or you may have re-stress fractured it.   You should definitely see your podiatrist for x-rays and evaluation.

Arthritis: Typically fractures that involve a joint may go on to post traumatic arthritis. This is arthritis caused by the injury not osteoarthritis or whole body arthritis. This usually is localized to the affected joint. Painfulankle arthritis may be treated by steroid injections, bracing or surgery including total ankle replacement or ankl fusion. Ankle replacement is a good option if you are a candidate.

Cause: You have not mentioned your age and other medical conditions and medications. Important thing is to find out the cause of your weak bones.  The important causes include metabolic, hormonal causes and adverse effects of meds.  The treatment of underlying cause is crucial. Make sure to discuss this with your internist, so that this aspect of your problem is not missed amidst surgical treatment.

6 weeks: Fractures take about 6 -8 weeks to heal, but it may be about another 6 weeks until you feel like you have fully recovered.  Hang in there!

Could be normal: If the pain continues even after taking anti-inflammatory medications and ice applied to the ankle, i would recommend seeing a doctor again in 1 week. This could also be a soft tissue  injury and may only be seen on mri.
