Jaundice!: I am somewhat confused. Physiologic jaundice is expected and doesn't require treatment. Peaks between 3-5 dats old and is &lt;12.9 level. As a normal physiologic mechanism the fetal hemoglobin changes to adult hemoglobin after the baby start breathing. No worries: Bring that up with your pediatrician. What is yellowish to you may not be actual yellow. To your doctor...May be a reflection of genetics or melanin content.  Your pediatrician can reassure you by seeing it. Many newborns have yellowish color until about a month old..She is a bit older so it would be helpful to have her seen. It most likely just a bit prolonged in clearing.

Transition work: Before birth the mothers body cleans all the babies blood & that stops at birth. The babies liver must gear up to breakdown & recycle proteins from the blood that can produce jaundice.Many issues can cause a backup of work & increase the jaundice. Over time the liver catches up with the work & jaundice fades .If the level gets high various rx are used  to help bring it down.

Bilirubin: This is very common to have physiologic jaundice from days 4-6 of life.  The liver is immature to break down the bilirubin, which can lead to some elevated numbers which causes the jaundice. There are other risk factors that can cause jaundice as well, like a cross reactivity bt babies and your blood type, prematurity,etc. Usually time will improve it, but sometimes the baby will need phototherapy

Common problem: Depending upon the levels, your baby may need treatment with a blue spectrum phototherapy light.  This is a common problem related to the newborn liver learning to take care of the bilirubin molecule.  It usually peaks at 3-5 days of life and then diminishes, although it can last longer if you are breastfeeding.  Discuss the levels with your pediatrician.  Good luck.

Unlikely an issue: About 1/3 of newborns have neonatal jaundice to some degree, peaking around day 4 and gradually declining. Some have jaundice enough to require phototherapy (lights) and rarely some require transfusions. As long as they receive proper therapy if needed, there is rarely if ever any long term effect on the kid.

Depends: The answer depends on the baby's health status. Is he a premie? Dehydrated? On a ventilator? On iv's? Septic? What kind of jaundice?  Anemic?   Too many variables missing to answer your question properly.

Nothing worrisome: The jaundice reflects an accumulation of metabolic waste that was removed through the placenta during pregnancy.At high levels this can cause problems, but as the babies system catches up with the work, it drops to low levels that do not cause harm.In fact we all have some low levels of this material in our system through life.

Jaundice : Physiologic neonatal jaundice is yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes due to elevation of a breakdown product of old blood cells called bilirubin that builds up in newborns due to immaturity of liver enzymes. Pathologic neonatal jaundice can also result from various disease states. Phototherapy with special lights, or more aggressive therapy, may be needed to lower bilirubin to safe levels.
