Guided Therapy: Depending upon whether this was an anterior or posterior dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint you may or may not need surgery.  If non-surgical, brief immobilization and then guided therapy with a physical therapist to increase range of motion and limit pain.  If surgical, you may similarlly need immobilization and rehab but of a slightly longer duration.  Most heal nicely without surgery.

NSAIDs: Maybe helpful.  Also consider supplements like glucosamine/chondroitin. Exercise muscles around the joint you are worried about to limit wear and tear.  Lastly if not improving consider how platelet therapy or stem cells can be helpful for you.  Check out Regenexx.Com

Various: Your physical therapist may choose to work on the range of motion for that joint, pain control and reducing the stiffness by using certain exercises, applying heat and cold substances, using ultrasound, tens unit, water therapy etc. Have him examine you and decide what modalities will serve you better.

Avoid contractures: Physical therapy and specifically range of motion exercises can prevent joint from becoming stiff and accompanying muscles from becoming contracted.

Yes: It is important to have a thorough physical therapy evaluation to determine what is impacting your sacroiliac joint dysfunction.  Treatments should focus on manual tissue and joint techniques to align and mobilize the area, as well as stabilization exercises to maintain equal forces around the joint and to protect the joint.

if i have a joint replacement, how long does physical therapy usually last?

Not too long: Joint replacements shouldn't really require much (if any) physical therapy.  Most of my patients who have had new knees and hips (once the surgical / anesthesia aftershock wears off in a few days) are "up and running".  Physical therapy should not have much call in these cases of having new joints.  Basically your joints have just magically gotten younger.  New joints don't need therapy.

i have sacroiliitis which i understand is inflammation of the sacroiliac joint.  i have been receiving physical therapy. i have been receiving physical therapy, about 18 sessions over three months.  there is some slow reduction of the pain i experience.

Accepted Answer

Sacroiliitis : Sacroiliitis is commonly confused with back problems.  The pain is located in butt in the pocket area of pants.  Patients tend to not want to sit on the painful side.  It is usually tender to push over the area.  Sacroiliitis may be treated with physical therapy, steroid injections, radiofrequency ablation (burning) and endoscopic rhizotomy (nerve cutting) and surgery.  Steroid injections often provide short term relief (months) and the addition of physical therapy may be beneficial.  Nerve burning and endoscopic rhizotomy may provide significant but usually temporary pain relief due to the diffuse wide spread innervation of the sacroiliac joint from both front and back of the joint.  New surgical techniques and devices have recently been or are in the process of being released (fda approved) which gives hope for longterm treatment in the future. 6 weeks: Some patients require up to 3 months of therapy, but most are able to transition to a home exercise program six weeks after surgery.

You can: It all depends on your physical health. Age is not the defining factor.

Depends: If the knee is severly arthritic and deformed with constant pain no question the knee replacement is by far a better option.Pt does not correct the arthritis , it help to srengh the muscles around the knee, improve the rom and muscles contractures.One is not  subtitute for the other, they complement each other.
