i have petechiae that show up whenever i scratch my skin too much. i've had it for a while but i've never gotten it looked at. should i be concerned?

Yes check it out: This might be nothing but I would suggest you visit your physician just in case.  He could run a complete blood count and see what your platelet levels are at.

Unlikely petechiae: Those are unlikely to be petechiae. Petechiae are typically not brought on by itching or other trauma, They occur spontaneously and are an indicator of a very low platelet count. When you say "normal blood tests", what blood tests exactly? a CBC ?

: Yes it is possible to break some blood vessels and get petechia. Do they resolve with time and do you have them elsewhere? Those are the thigs to follow up with you doctor.

Yes: If a person's skin is rubbed hard enough, some of the tiny blood vessels (capillaries) under the skin will break and appear as blood spots (petechiae). If a person is rubbing just one area of skin, and the petechiae appear just in that area, then the rubbing has caused the petechiae. If petechiae appear in non-rubbed areas, then another problem is causing them.

Need to be checked: If you are having petechiae you should get it checked as it is not normal.You need physical exam and confirm that it is petechiae.And may need a blood test for platlet count and other tests to find the cause of your petechiae.

Not really likely: Petechiae is caused by broken capillaries in the skin. This is not really something that can be caused by scrubbing. It is also possible that what you have is not really petechiae and is maybe simple folliculitis. It is probably best to stop scrubbing and wash more gently. If this does not resolve then you should perhaps see you gp.

See your doctor: Random implies no cause.  If you are trying to figure out why you have it consider very hot showers, trauma, shaving, and many other possibilities.  Have your doctor take a look and discuss it with her.  Often time the pattern or placement explains why it is there.
