should you leave the house when pest control is happening? is it toxic?

Accepted Answer

The exterminator: will tell you if you should vacate and if so for how long. Fortunately a combination of less toxic/still effective chemicals make this a "rare" necessity. (One exception is the contamination of a home by fleas brought in by a house pet.....)

how unsafe is vikane gas? my pest control company plans to use it when tenting my house for fumigation.

Sulfuryl fluoride: Vikane gas is basically sulfuryl Fluoride which can be toxic to humans if inhaled (that's why they have you leave your house when it's fumigated).  They don't let you back in until the air concentration is less than a certain amount deemed safe by your state.  How much more unsafe are these residual amounts than lets say mercury in fish or pesticides on fruit?  No good studies that i know of.

Accepted Answer

Not likely : If chemical exposure is responsible for leukemia or other cancers it is prolonged exposure that is felt to be necessary.

sometimes i get red itchy welt like bumps anywhere on my body. they resemble insect bites but pest control found nothing. they disappear within mins?

ALLERGIC RASH: Above rash description can be allergic in nature or irritation from tight garters, etc.

Not likely: It does not seem likely that you could have been exposed in a significant way in the circumstance you describe. Usually if exterminators are using dangerous chemicals they ask people to leave the house for a designated period of time

Probably good idea: If there is concern for pests then spraying regularly to avoid contact with the bugs is probably a good idea to keep you and your family safe. Simply follow the instructions to vacate the area for the time suggested.

how did the medieval times people deal with pest/rodent control?

Not much: Rodents and pests at those times were considered a part of normal living.  There were no pesticides and limited means for cleanly storage.  Cats were useful for rodents but that was all.  Lifespan in that era was in the 30s and disease was the major killer.  So the options were very limited.

Don't see a problem: The frequencies emitted by or fields used by such products are safe around humans at any age.

Get checked: Not sure what you mean by "pest", but if referring to genitals, then you both should get checked for infection. Don't have unprotected sex until it is diagnosed/treated.

Do not worry: You may use the local teas without fear of poisoning by insecticides or other chemicals. There are more of these chemicals in the air than are likely to be in the tea.
