Shock absorbers: Teeth are not really held in bone or attached to bone.  They are held in place by periodontal ligaments.  So really the tooth is suspended inside a bony socket.
As tartar builds up or gums and bone receed....The periodontal ligaments disappear too.  Earl.

Depends: If it is just a simple inflammation or irritation from biting something hard and the tooth and patient are otherwise healthy i would say yes most of the time, but if there are other issues such as periodontal disease then it may lead to more probs.

Quite a bit: You can bite with a lot of force so to bruise one would be difficult under normal function, but if you unexpectadly hit it with a bone or something very hard that you shouldn't bite on, that will do it.  A bruised ligament is really tears of some of the fibers and that can make it very sore to bite on and even feel swollen, not look it though.

Not long: If tooth was in hyper function, adjusting the occlusion should result in almost immediate reduction of symptoms.  Like any other bruise it should begin healing as soon as the "insult" is removed.  If still sore after a week, or if soreness increases, call your Dentist again.

Great Question: You are correct,  a vital tooth should have no abscess (no infection). But I've encountered situations on multi-rooted molars where one canal is vital and the other may be non-vital due to trauma (no infection). It is rare, but I've seen it. That's what makes answering your question, sight unseen, difficult. If your dentist is having difficulty, see a local endodontist.

does sprained tooth syndrome or peridontal ligament strain need a root canal?

Most likely no: While your tooth may be sore, it will more that likely feel normal after a week or so. That injured tooth is more at risk for a root canal sometime in the future, as the trauma from the strain can interrupt the blood supply to the tooth and cause a cascading inflammatory reaction in the tooth's pulp (nerve). The older you are, the more likely it will be irreversible and require a future Endo.

REST/MEDICATION: The first thing to do is discern why there is inflammation. Is it from overuse or is there a more inflammatory and systemic process going on - i.e. Early rheumatoid arthritis. Rest, anti-inflammatory medication and splinting are initial therapies. Occasionally local cortisone injections are used. 
Physical therapy closely following to insure restoration of tendon function.
