No: Pepto-bismol has a salicylate in it, similar to what is in aspirin.  You should not take this in pregnancy.

i have stomach issues and always take prilosec but sometimes that's not always good enough. why can't i take pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) while pregnant? i need it!

No Peptobismol: Peptobismol has Aspirin like products in it.  Discuss with your ob/gyn sucking on raw ginger root for pregnancy related issues.  Careful with the prilosec. If you have taken for a while, it can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency.  Might consider having B12 levels checked.

Accepted Answer

No: Peptobismol is not the best choice for diarrhea in pregnancy. It contains Aspirin like products which are generally not used in pregnancy except in certain conditions. Immodium is a better choice. If if you took a small amount of peptobismol already it is unlikely to cause problems.

Yes: Unless it has been stored in too much heat, it will have the proper effect even though an expiration date might be passed.

Don't worry: Although generally we recommend against pepto because of its Aspirin content, one dose is not harmful.

Pepto-Bismol : Pepto-bismol is categorized as a "class c" drug in pregnancy and should only be taken if specifically instructed to do so by your doctor.  Only "class a and class b" medications are safe to take during pregnancy without a doctor's consent.

5 safe things your niece can do for her pregnancy associated nausea are:
- ginger - such as ginger tea or ginger ale
- saltine crackers - they absorb stomach acid and can help nausea
- eat small amounts of food frequently - eating too much food at once can trigger vomiting
- avoid odors that make you nauseous 
- acupressure bands - there is a pressure point on the wrist that can alleviate nausea that an acupressure wrist band can trigger.

No problem: It is common to have upset stomach in later pregnancy.  After all there is a large mass growing the the same space as the stomach and intestines.  Peptobismol is an effective treatment for gastic acidity and irritation, and you can safely take it at 35 weeks.

upon awakening i'm very nauseated and shaky, what could this be i;m not pregnant, could this be related to diverticulosis, what can i do to settle my stomach , i've used aloe juice, pepto

Accepted Answer

A : A patient with nausea and shakiness on awakening could try eating 4-5 small, high protein meals a day, but not eating 1-2 hours before bedtime.  The patient should be sure that their room is at a cool temperature at night, approximately 65 degrees, and well-ventilated.    Not exercising for at least an hour before bedtime can be helpful.  If these tips don't help and the symptoms persist, then it would be reasonable to consult the patient's physician.

hi i'm having black stool i heard that taking pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) can do this now i'm not having any blood in my stool and i could be pregnant should this be happening?

Taking peptobismol : Peptobismol can indeed cause dark stools whether you are pregnant or not. Upper gastrointestinal bleeding can also do so. The concern is that you could be taking the peptobismol for a condition that causes bleeding. Check with your OB about the problem and have it evaluated. Be safe. Hope this helps.
