Evaluation: The need for antibiotic prescription is a medical and clinical decision based on symptoms, likely etiology of infection and other concerns.  An antibiotic prescription likely will not be written just because some one feels that they need it.  Remember most infections are viral and antibiotics are not effective for treatment and over use of antibiotics has results in antibiotic resistance.

i'm allergic 2 penicillin/prescribed cephalexin 4 a cellulitis infection in my arm from a iv. how fast would a serious reaction occur if allergic ?

Minutes to hours: A small proportion of penicillin allergic patients can have an allergic reaction to cephalexin.   Drug allergic reactions can occur in minutes to hours if already sensitized.   It is possible to develop serious allergic reactions after several days of being on the medication and in some cases even shortly after stopping the med.  Allergy testing is available for penicillin but not cephalexin.

Yes: Antibiotics &amp; anti-anxiety medications can be taken at the same time.  Please know that your Pharmacist is a marvelous source of drug interaction knowledge.  If you had both prescriptions filled at the same pharmacy the Pharmacist would have already checked for problematic drug interaction.  Additionally, make sure you take the entire course of antibiotic, don't quit until all the pills are gone.

i'm allergic to penicillin.  was prescribed cephalexin for folliculitis.  stop taking it 3 days ago.  now i have hives all over. delayed reaction?

Possible: A small % of people who are allergic to penicillin may also react to cephalosporin such as cephalexin.  However, if your reaction did not occur until about 10 days after you started to take the medication, this may well be a true allergic reaction specific to cephalexin.

since i'm allergic to penicillin, i was prescribed cefazolin, but i'm terrified of needles. can i take pills instead?

Depends: Usually antibiotics are administerd intravenously in order to get a high level of the drug (higher than that which can be acheived with a pill).  Depending on the type of infection you have, you may need the intravenous form.  The pills may not be strong enough to treat the infection.

i was allergic to ceclor as a baby i am 27 and was prescribed penicillin. is it ok to take it? my pharmacist seemed worried so now i am scared

Pharmacist is right: To be extra cautious, you can still not be allergic to penicillin, or even ceclor, as with some people drug allergies wane with time, even if it was a true allergic reaction, but most of the time it is just a rash, ceclor is known for it, or viral rash. At any rate, kindly ask your prescriber for an alternative, if none, and it is an absolute necessity, see an allergist for evaluation, good luck

i looked in the mirror and i have 2 sores on my tonsils.  the more painful one is a hole.  i was prescribed penicillin but its not working.  in pain!

Aphthous ulcer: Could be a virus that has to run its course. Have an ENT check it out.

STD maybe: The procaine eases the pain and prolongs the action..Used for STDs often.....

what if i missed a dose of penicillin? my doctor prescribed 10 days of penicillin, twice daily. i forgot my evening dose yesterday. do i take two together?

No, : No, do not double your dose.  Just take the next dose as you normally would and finish out the entire course.
