Yes: The size and shape of your stool is determined by how long the stool is in your rectum, and the tightness of your anal muscles.  Long duration in the rectum = larger, harder stools.  Tight anal muscles will make stool 'squeeze out' -- like out of a toothpaste container.
You can stop these swings by getting more fiber (roughage) in your diet or taking benefiber; make sure to get enough water also!

"Pencil" stools: refers to the effect of a "circling" cancer of the colon/rectal area...but more frequently is due to Spasm of the lower bowel seen in IBS. If they CONTINUE it needs attention and a "look/see"

i had a hemroidectomy  on  october  10  and  still in pain having bms. my stool  is the size of a pencil. will i have to have surgery  for stinonis  ?

Indications 4 surg: At this time you are still in the recovery phase from hemorrhoid surgery and having problems, aka recovery setback. Best to check in with your surgery team about evaluating and treating the pain and change in caliber of your stool. More time, anti-inflammatory medication, an exam of the area (under anesthesia), scope, other imaging may help. Be well.

Less worries please: Stool texture (regardless of volume or frequency of movements) , shape, &amp; caliber are affected by multiple factors (fiber intake, bacterial load, GI transit, fluid secretion, etc.)  Sounds however like your evaluation has been at least reassuring to-date.

Yes, unless change: Bowel habits have a wide range of 'normal'. Frequency may be twice daily to energy other day. Comsistency can be loose (not watery) to firm (not hard). Length can vary (pencil length can be normal) as can diameter. Shape can vary. Color can be from dark tan (not chalky) to dark (not black). Most important issue regarding 'normal' is if there is a change in pattern for over 1-2 wks, then c ur doc.

The most common...: When someone present with the complaint of pencil stools the first thing to check for is a colon mass. Another possibility is constipation. In any case, make an appointment with your primary care doctor or a gastroenterologist for immediate evaluation. There are other possibilities but definitely a mass needs to be ruled out.
