?pinched nerve: Unless you had a recent injury,  a common cause of this fleeting sharp pain aggravated by a deep breath is a pinched intercostal nerve which runs between 2 ribs. Another possibility is inflammation of the lung lining(pleurisy) or early pneumonia. The pinched nerve resolves on its own usually. Avoid straining the rib cage. See your physician if symptoms persist or worsen.
