2 issues: First of, little is known at this time and most are observations, not backed up by studies. With race the genetic makeup is different and that may influence immunity, second would be confounding variables, such as poverty or poor baseline health status if they affect more 1 race than others. Time will tell.

: 1. by urine culture. 2.If improperly collected it can be wrong- both positive and neg. 3.If detected late it may lead to infection/ septicemia.

...: Universal precautions are the first step towards preventing infections. This means using gloves, gowns or masks when coming into contact with blood or bodily fluids. Universal precautions applies to everyone. Certain infections require additional precautions. Tuberculosis requires airborne isolation. Influenza requires droplet isolation. Mrsa and c diff require contact isolation.

COPD: Emphysema patients has chronic obstructive lung disease so any infection  can set in easily. It is manifested by shortness of breath  and coughing episodes. Meds are necessary.

Take care of wound: Hopefully the surgeon gave you some instructions on how to care for the wound. Since this is a break in the skin that goes through the bone, you have to be careful for it to remain clean until it heals. You should have a follow up arranged with the doctor to assess for wound healing. I assume you have access to fresh clean bandage? Do you have a visiting nurse? They can show you proper wound care.

Bacterial: Infections related to the vascular catheter, and gut injury from chemotherapy. Pneumonia. Fungal infections while on steroids with prolonged low blood counts.
