Not necessarily: Slow bleeding from colon cancer can lead to anemia, without visible blood or black tarry stools. More often than not, anemia is the presenting symptom, especially for right sided colon cancers.

Yes: One of the potential side effects for radiation therapy to treat prostate cancer is rectal bleeding.  This can occur after brachytherapy or external beam therapy.  This is called proctitis and is generally mild and self-limiting.  It usually does not require any treatment other than conservative management such as maintaining soft bowel movements, hydration, and monitoring of blood work.

See your doc: If you had bright red rectal blood (and you're sure it was rectal and not menstrual) then you need to see your doc (especially if you didn't when it first started). Lots of things can cause rectal bleeding, ranging from hemorrhoids to fissures to cancers. Rectal bleeding is never normal and always needs to be checked out.

Colon cancer: Given your age and symptoms your doctor is probably correct. If you are not bleeding and not having symptoms i would not refer you for colonoscopy to evaluate for colon cancer. And yes, colon cancer would continue to bleed and would have caused multiple other symptoms by now.

Get medical check up: Rectal bleeding is caused either by Cancer or Hemorrohids. You should go see your doctor for an examination so that you can find the cause. cancer can occur in anyone of us....family history of no Cancer does not help as 90% of people who develop Cancer  do not have family history of cancer. So you need to be careful and get a good medical exam.

No Rules: Unlikely that after all this time, there would be a cancer not causing symptoms. However, cancer does not follow rules.
If there was bleeding, some evaluation should have been done, and maybe still should.

Your doc can help: Lots of causes for rectal bleeding, including anal disorders like hemorrhoids or fissures, inflammatory bowel diseases like crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, diverticular disease, fragile blood vessels, infection, polyps, cancers, other. Likely causes or not vary somewhat with age, other history, etc.  See your doc, get checked out.
