Chancre: The most common source of a painless chancre on the penis would be syphilis and suggest that you be tested for this as well as other STDs. This usually occurs within 21 days, plus or minus, of the exposure, and I cannot explain the long delay of 8 months. Suggest you see a dermatologist. For your interest, the word "chancre" comes from the french and means "little ulcer".

: A common cause of ulcer and genital area are sexually transmitted diseases. Syphilis causes painless ulcers. Chancroid causes painful ulcer with enlarged lymph nodes in inguinal area. Herpes causes small blister that burst open and form painful sores in genitals. If you are sore you can sit in the warm water 15 minutes twice a day, cotton clothes, do not have sex till it heals. : If you have had oral herpes a long time (more than a new months), you needn't worry. People are immune to new infections with the HSV type they already have, and therefore almost transfer their longstanding infections to new body areas. People with oral herpes never infect their own genitals. Nothing to worry about!

YES: With herpes simplex virus, the viral outbreak period can last from 6 to 23 days.
At the prodromal period (itching/burning sensation before the visible signs or outbreak) you may be able to reduce the severity by taking antiviral meds  and using a topical antiviral cream or ointment. 
You are contagious to yourself and others from prodromal until 3 days after the lesions are completely healed.

: Open sores in the genital region always carry a high suspicion of sexually transmitted infection. Have it checked by a Dr in person ASAP as there may be a simple treatment. Waiting may result in more severe problems. Best case scenario, if it is just a wound, then you will have ruled out the more serious of the concerns.
