Get an exam!: While this may be something benign like a lipoma, it is important to have the lump examined to see whether or not it should be removed.  Lumps that are not mobile, sometimes called adherent, are more worrisome - so you should be seen sooner than later.

hard painless lump on outer thigh >5cm. has grown in in size. doesn't move, under skin, can't see but can feel. should i be concerned?

Prob not but ...: Hard things that are growing in size should be checked. A simple needle biopsy can confirm it's benign ( not cancer) And then you can relax. If growing rapidly or painful it should be removed

Needs evaluation: I am concerned about this description. I recommend an evaluation by your primary care physician or a surgeon to determine if you need a biopsy, or should just have it removed.  There are types of cancer called sarcoma which can grow like this.

Can't say without-: -hands on exam, but could B veins dilated from increased blood flow to Ur quads. Best 2 B examined right after you play, or there may be a team physician who can see you on the field.

Lymph node vs. cyst: Any skin and subcutaneous lesion heavy depend upon visual exam to be diagnosed correctly but two assumptions can be made from your description. One is a cyst and the other one is a lymph node.
