Its in their genes: It is rare, but studies have shown that they have a genetic predisposition toward addiction. It is not enough to be predisposed one must also be exposed the agent causing addiction. For many people, their first exposure to narcotics occurs following trauma or surgery, and for less than 1% things can escalate out of control from there.

i have a damaged miniscus. i don't want to have surgery because i don't want to take time off work.  could it heal naturally. i take painkillers?

Possibly: Because the blood supply to the meniscus is less than other areas of the body, tears are slow to heal.  Depending on the location of the tear, they may never heal.  I suggest limiting your activity to things that don't cause pain and wait and see if it heals.  There are products that claim to increase blood supply to the area but they don't have scientific evidence to support the claim.

Pain killers: The best pain killer for the pain is the one that relieves your pain.  It can be over the counter medication like Ibuprofen or tylenol, (acetaminophen) or prescription medication

Call doctor : It’s always best to talk to the prescribing doctor when treatment related problems arise. The feedback is always appreciated. An antiemetic taken 30-60 minutes before the pain killers should solve the problem

Depends: Probably the most common is Acetaminophen + hydrocodone (vicodin, norco) but it depends on the patient and how the tolerate pain.  I have used Ibuprofen and tramadol (ultram) in other patients with success and less side effects.  Talk with your doctor before surgery.

Let's talk: You want to smoke weed because you are used to smoking weed every day, probably . No judgement here just reality. Cannabis has well known addictive powers and your body most likely is talking to you. There is no problem smoking /using cannabis the day after surgery. The combination of your pain killers and Cannabis will magnify any central CNS ( brain) effect. Be cautious.

Get diagnosed first: There are a number of things that can cause pain in the legs. This is a very nonspecific symptom.  I recommend that someone pain in this area should be seen by orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon for a definitive diagnosis so that appropriate treatment can be started.  You can find one in your area at www.Aofas.Org.

Yes: Surgery is the last remedy to consider. A proper differential diagnosis by an md is called for. Feel better!

Hydrocodone: Orthopedists commonly prescribe hydrocodone with or without Acetaminophen (which is tylenol). Alternatively you could be given an antiinflammatory.
