See details: It depends of which joint. It may be bony enlargement secondary to osteoarthritis. It may be a synovial cyst. If you are concerned have it evaluated and the hand x rayed.

X-ray: Go get your finger an X-ray of your finger to see if there is a fracture.  Additionally, there may be an infection at the site of the fracture.  This needs to be done right away as this can be very serious.

? beginning infectio: Your vivid description sounds like like the beginning of an infection in one of your fingers.  You should contact your primary physician ASAP and see him and start to be treated right away.
