i had a cortizone (hydrocortisone) shot in my lft knee 5 days ago 4 inflammation.how long before the shot will take effect 4 i still have pain on outer side of knee?

Depends: If the pain has been present for more than 2 weeks, it may need to be evaluated further.  Locking, catching, or giving out are signs of.A more serious problem.

Pain after Cortisone : A cortisone shot doesn't completely eliminate pain but is intended to reduce the pain. The clicking is concerning for cartilage issues with your meniscus. It's important to schedule a Followup with your orthopedic surgeon.

ITBand : Pain on the outside of the knee is often ileotibial band syndrome which is caused by poor biomechanics and repetitive stress. Check how worn your shoes are. Ice. Stretch. Physical therapy and perhaps an orthotic are often needed for complete relief of symptoms.

Sprain/strain likely: Doubt clot if you are active and have no clotting abnormalities. Clot pain usually more center calf.  Try rest, heat, NSAIDs for pain.  Stretching may help. Knee brace might also provide stability while healing.

Knee dislocation: Did u dislocate ur entire knee or more commonly the knee cap ? Catching and pain on the lateral side can indicate a problem with the patelofemoral  articulation. This should be evaluated

Could be PFTD.: Hard to tell from a short snippet of information, but this could be something called "patellofemoral tracking disorder", otherwise known as "patellar maltracking", wherein the patella does not move across the knee joint as it usually should, which can cause pain from bone-on-bone contact.  But, again...could be.  An X-ray and MRI of the knee may be helpful.

Variety of causes: Knee pain can have many causes. Whether the onset is acute or gradual or related to injury or specific activities can help us narrow the possibilities. Age of the patient and prior knee problems also give us clues. If >50, then meniscal (cartilage) tears and osteoarthritis are the most likely causes. Patellar tendonitis, patellofemoral & it band syndrome are common in young & active patients.
