Depends: There could be a variety of causes. Appendicitis sometimes begins as pain near the umbilicus (belly button) and then often migrates to the right lower abdominal quadrant. Severe abdominal pain warrants urgent medical assessment.

Muscular: There could be a mildly strained abdominal muscle. If the upper abdomen becomes quite painful and tender, a physician should examine you. In the meantime avoid any strain of the abdominal muscles.

Mallory Weiss: Sure, Mallory-Weiss syndrome is the term for a tear (laceration) of the inner lining (mucous membrane) of the esophagus where it connects to the stomach (gastroesophageal junction). The tear results from forceful retching, vomiting, or severe hiccupping that is frequently due to an underlying disorder or cause. Please see your provider if you think you have a bleeding.

Any other symptoms?: Other than tightness in the upper mid abdomen, any other symptoms like heart burn, nausea/vomiting  etc present? If so it could be gastritis. Avoid eating spicy foods, cut down fried foods . Try initially OTC antacids. If still there , consult your PCP.

Yes: it's very common for reflux to cause pain in the epigastrium. If you get discomfort in that region that you suspect is from reflux, it is appropriate to try an antacid to see if it helps. It is important to try to follow anti-reflux precautions and to take your reflux medication on a regular basis. Good luck.

Maybe: You may also have gallbladder inflammation especially that you are the age when such risk (especially being female) is high. Please have an ultrasound of the abdomen as soon as possible in addition to blood work by your pcp.  Avoid greasy food in the time being. Good luck.

Stomach pain: 19 F with aching stomach wants to growl but can't. .Suspect gas. Try drinking a coke and belching. It that does not work then try milk. If that does not help then try TUMS (calcium carbonate). If that does not help see your health care team. Review what you have eaten recently.  Ask if anyone who ate with you has same problem.
