Cardiac or not: First of course, rule out a cardiac cause. See your family doctor or cardiologist to have a thorough evaluation. If it is not cardiac, consider costochondritis (teitzes syndrome) which causes severe sternal and chest discomfort. Finally, a rare condition, sternalis syndrome may cause these symptoms.A ct scan of the chest should also rule out pulmonary or mediastinal pathology.

waking up gasping for air when i'm falling asleep. occasional localized pain in sternum. healthy ecg 2 yr ago,  good bp, doc says heart & lungs sound good. do i still need to worry about heart failure?

Not really: I would be more concerned about the possibility of a condition known as obstructive sleep apnea. You should mention this to your doc.

Throat: A great number of patients present to the ENT with bumpiness of the back of the throat.  This photograph shows some bumpiness that is associated with lymphoid tissue in the back of the throat.  This type of finding can be associated with irritation from post nasal drip or allergies.  It can also be associated with viral illness and if persistent should see an ENT or PCP.

Don't worry: its not your heart.  But it's a good thing to see a doctor at least once yearly to get checked out for everything.

Sternal pain: Recurrent substernal pain relieved by antacids points more toward GI tract. Recommend consulting your primary care doc. For exam & referral to gastroentorologist.

Very possibly: The things which exacerbate or trigger your pain, such as pressing on it, favor a musculoskeletal (joint/tendon/muscle/bone) cause. Also, given your age more serious heart/lung causes of pain would be less likely. Often one can't recall a specific activity causing the strain, but when you can, that helps support the diagnosis. Rest, use ice if you want, take anti-inflammatories. Better in few days

It sounds like you: have some kind of a chest wall problem. You need to see a health care provider for an evaluation. This does not sound like a cardiac or pulmonary issue.

NO!: You do not have to live with this pain. You have swelling in the area, and you owe it to yourself to find out why and what you can do about it. If your primary care doc is stumped, i suggest a rheumatologist to see if you have some type of inflammatory condition leading to your symptoms. Physical therapy modalities may also be useful in alleviating the pain and swelling/edema.

can mohs surgery in sternum area, cause what feels like intermittent bone pain in sternum 5 years later? the growth was the size of a 50 cent coin.

Not the Surgery: You need medical evaluation to rule out a number of possibilities. Expect a Chest X-Ray, possibly a CT of your chest , EKG, other Cardiac testing and lab work.
