Nerve pain: Pain in the upper back could be caused by pressure on a nerve near the upper spine from a spur or disc problem. If it persists or worsens, have an exam and pertinent x ray studies.

See below: Shoulder and/or shoulder blade pain can be caused by an irriated shoulder or a pinched nerve in the neck.  If turning your head in the direction of pain causes the pain to shoot to your shoulder and shoulder blade there is a good chance it's coming from your neck.

Massage then mri: Tears in muscles often respond to massage.  If it doesn't improve than may be a problem in the spine and require a mri.  Physical therapy can help.
