why might i feel pain in my lymph nodes when i drink alcohol? the pain is in the collarbone, shoulder and sometimes neck. cbcs are normal.

That's a new one!: That is an unusual symptom.  'Course, I've only been a doc for 30 years, and have a lot to learn still!  Maybe another doc on this forum is familiar with this.  It does depend on where the pain is. How do you know that the pain is in your lymph nodes?  Do all types of alcohol do this?  Give a few more details, and we'll have a  better understanding of what's going on and can maybe give better info

Not likely: Painful lymph nodes is almost never a sign of hodgkins lymphoma, especially without any weight loss or night sweats.  However, i agree with dr. Kittaneh, your should definitely get it checked out.

Hodgkin lymphoma: Lymph node pain from alcohol is a "classic" (but uncommon) symptom in hodgkin's lymphoma. It doesn't prove that any cancer or lymphoma is present, but is worthy of a physician history and physical examination to start.

No relationship: Drinking alcohol can cause a lot of different problems but swelling of the lymph nodes is not related to alcohol use. You have to ask your doctor to find another cause for the enlarged nodes, if they are really a problem, .

Not likely: Probably not. If your lymph nodes have been the same size for 10 years likely there is nothing wrong with them. I can't explain why you got shoulder and neck pain with drinking alcohol--I am stumped with that one!

Exam: You must be examined and obtain specific blood testing and imaging for further evaluation of neck masses. Stop alcohol now!

ENT consult advised: Your symptoms could be allergic in nature, but due to the persistence of the symptoms, further evaluation is indicated.  An ENT evaluation is recommended.  While waiting for your appt., recommend trial of Zyrtec (cetirizine) at night and stopping alcohol products.  If you smoke, stop now.

Alcohol: There are no currently available drugs to reduce alcohol consumption. The only drug in the past used to control alcohol use was "Antabuse". This must only be used under careful medical supervision because of its SERIOUS side effects. The best drug to reduce alcohol use is self control. Barring this try good psychotherapy and or AA.

Alcohol & Pregnancy: Nope. But it surely can lead to damage to the development and brain of the fetus growing inside the pregnant female who is drinking alcohol while pregnant.

In Limited Quanity: Red wine is known for its beneficial effects on heart and vascular functioning.  A 4 ounce glass a day is quite adequate to achieve this goal.

There are calming effects of alcohol in general in small amounts, but more larger amounts and frequency can be deadly.
