why do i have pain in my lower leg but not above the knees and not below the ankles?

You could have : Something like shin splints which would only affect the anatomical region above the ankle and below the knee. There are other possibilities as well. Claudication, will occur typically in the calf region. Various tendonitis conditions can occur in that region as well. I would advise a trip to the orthopedist for definitve diagnosis and treatment.

See below: Most likely from improper support.  Get a pair of orthotics to put into your shoes to support the foot and ankle.  For the pain try using ice, stretching and ibuprofen.

Stasis dermatitis: This could be small drops f blood in skin. This can come from varicose veins. If however they are of recent onset they could represent a condition called vasculitis which is an allergic reaction to a drug, or possible underlying infection. Either way see a doctor for evaluation. It is difficult to remove the color of changes from varicose veins.

Pain in lower legs: It's good that pain has subsided now. It could be due to wrong posture while sleeping, tendonipathy or even osteoarthritis. See a doctor if it re-occurs.
