Hip joint popping: Popping of a joint is not necessarily a sign of a serious problem.  If there is pain associated with the popping, then our concerns go up.  Recommend an orthopaedic consult if you are concerned.

Possibly: Double jointed hips usually means that one has loose ligaments/capsule of the joints.  Loose joints in general if there is excessive motion at that joint over time can lead to cartilage damage and in severe cases dislocation.  If one maintains adequate stability in the joint by keeping the muscle strong that may be enough to keep the joint from incurring damage.

Means there is: Less cartilage between the ball of the leg bone and the socket of the hip bone. Since the x-ray only sees bone, narrowing often means destruction or wear and tear of cartilage has occurred.

Hip joint: Depends upon type & extent. Synovitis or sprain can be calmed down with pt, nsaids, purified omega, weight control, etc.

Unlikely: It is unlikely that the hip is slipping out of joint. A snapping hip could be causing your symptoms where muscle or tendon or other soft tissue is "slipping" over the edge of the bone.  This is best managed with stretching, pt, and sometimes a cortisone injection. At 51 you could also be experiencing symptoms of arthritis. See your doctor for an xray & evaluation.
