Anything: Headaches can come from fatigue, sleeping too much or too little, eye strain, sleep apnea, snoring, being dehydrated, having chronic sinusitis or allergies, too much caffeine or over the counter headache medication, high blood pressure or something more serious like a tumor. See your doctor and get checked.

Is there a history : Of trauma or family history of arthritis. You may have arthritis of the cervical spine. I recommend you see an interventional pain specialist.

Muscle or headache.: Neck strains - from poor posture, whiplash or vigorous exercise can cause muscle strains that you feel at the base of the skull (that's where some neck muscles attach).  Certain types of headaches can do this as well.  I'd try some Ibuprofen or alleve and see if it improves.  If you start having blurry or double vision, nausea, or fevers, i'd see your doctor right away!  cheers!

Urgent attention: Im not sure your age but 2 of the potentially lifethreatening causes of these symptoms are meningitis or brain haemorrhage (may also be migraine or neck issue).  Better safe than sorry so please if have not done so consult at doctor urgently to exclude these possibilities as it sounds like your pain is severe.

Go see your doctor: Most headaches that last this long are most likely due to muscle spasms from the neck or shoulder. Put ice on the back of your head and take 800mg of Ibuprofen every 8hrs not exceeding 3g. Do not take too much if you have stomach problems or history of stomach bleeding. If this doesn't resolve go see your physician.

Depends: Answer depends on whether this is the first time or a repetitive event. If a single event and no neurologic symptoms, see if pain is lessening over the next few days. If pain is not resolving after this initial event or. You have had more than one such episode, get checked out by your doctor.

One possibility is occipital neuralgia, a distinct type of headache with piercing, throbbing, or electric-shock-like chronic pain in the upper neck, the back of the head, and behind the ears, usually on one side of the head. There are also other causes of throbbing headaches.
