Yes: In the opioid class we have 40+ different medicines alone which can be used. But there are different types of pain. Some pain medicines work better than others for these different types. Often patients develop a tolerance too quickly due to factors such as genetics. It is important to find a Board Certified Pain Specialist to help diagnose the pain as this will lead to more specific treatment.

To prevent this, usually it is started at a low dose and increased slowly until the contractions are close enough together to open the cervix. Not everyone needs Pitocin (oxytocin) in labor. It is used when the contractions a woman is having on her own are not opening the cervix.

No.: Oxytocin is produced in the pituitary gland. Recovering hormones from humans (or animals) is associated w/ many risks. So there is no good reason to attempt to extract from living or dead persons/animals. To my knowledge, this is not being done anywhere. Oxytocin is a relatively easy protein made in the lab w/ the identical Amino Acid sequence found naturally in human beings -& it works perfectly.

Hyper-oxytocinemia? : Oxytocin is 1 of 8 hormones released by the pituitary gland, which is divided into the anterior & posterior lobes. Posterior lobe secretes oxytocin & adh (vasopressin). Main actions: aid w/ uterine contraction during labor & w/ release of breast milk. Excess can cause harder uterine contractions & stress the fetus.  Hyper secretion in non-pregnant /non-nursing female is rare & need endocrinology consultation.

As such, it is not intended to be cut/crushed/chewed/altered in any way etc (http://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/archives/fdaDrugInfo.cfm?archiveid=56577): "Taking cut, broken, chewed, crushed or diss[ol]ved OxyContin® Tablets leads to rapid release and absorption of a potentially fatal dose of oxycodone."
