Collagen: The abnormality of collagen is different with the different types of eds but the key is collagen. The overlapping charters tics are tied to the tissues containing the different types of collagen.  Most body parts contain more than 1 type of ollagen and will be affected by mutations of several different types. The severity of problems depends on the collagen type and severity of defect.

does age increase the severity of eds symptoms/problems?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Ed becomes more common with increasing age.  However, other factors play a role and are certainly more controllable.  Not smoking, and controlling blood sugars and blood pressure will help symptoms of ed.  Also, exercising will increase blood flow and decrease symptoms of ed.

It depends: There are several subsets of eds as well as a condition known as benign hyper mobility syndrome. Most individuals with eds have relatively mild disease and can expect a normal life span.

Possible: Certainly possible.Easy to determine.See your doctor for proper evaluation and diagnosis.Particularly if you have excessive fatigue, shortness of breath, chest pain or exercise intolerance.

No association: EDS and Lupus are unassociated with carcinoid. The carcinoid syndrome is  usually due to endocrinologically active malignant tumors that develop from neuroendocrine cells (mostly in the ileum) and produce serotonin. It can, however, occur from tumors elsewhere in the GI tract (particularly the appendix and rectum), pancreas, bronchi,   The primary has to be removed to prevent metastasis.

My: understanding is that the mutation, which would cause low levels, is associated with lymphoma. Also, thus far animal (mouse) studies identify it as a possible target for autoimmune diseases like bullous pemphigoid. No association to Enlhers.

Hmmmm: Sounds like you have a condition called diastasis recti, which is the separation of your abd muscle laterally causing a bulging in the middle. No hernia though.

It is the best tests: EDS can cause pulmonary hypertension, a condition that usually is difficult to diagnose with the physical exam only. Most cardiologist would start with non-invasive testing like an echocardiogram but to confirm such diagnosis right heart catheterization is still the best ( invasive) diagnostic procedure. Follow up with your cardiologist because there is treatment for pulmonary HTN.
