Proton pump inhibitr: Proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole, nexium, (esomeprazole) prilosec, etc. Decrease acid production helping ulcers.  They are over the counter now, but may be more expensive.  Medications like pepcid, ranitidine, pepto bismol, and mylanta may help with symptoms, but they are not as strong in protecting the stomach from ulcers.

Self diagnosis: As a nurse you should know that self-diagnosis can be at best wrong, at worst dangerous. If you are having GI symptoms you should be in the hands of a Gastroenterologist who can best evaluate your history, meds, images, lab tests, and clinical examination.

Take a couple of dee: Any medication that you take by mouth will take more than a few minutes before it can provide any relief of symptoms. So if your pain is knife like, it must be quite transient(lasting &lt;1 minute). Such pains are common and most of us have them. But they disappear as fast as they come on...so do not to take them seriously as these are not related to any disease, simply take a couple of deep breaths.

after experiencing asthmatic symptoms i was diagnosed with lung hyperinflation. could this cause moderate, persistent lower stomach pain? bloating? constipation? pain doesnt respond to otc medication or home remedies, which is unusual for me?

Some basics: Hyperinflation is a description not a diagnosis. It is seen on chest x-ray of an asthmatic whose lungs have trapped some air during a symptomatic period. It self resolves as symptoms improve. It has little to do with the cited symptoms. They are more likely diet or digestive system issues. Please discuss this with your doc &amp; start a food diary so you can identify what aggrivates the symptoms.

Yes: Most stomach ulcers can be cured medically taking pills, but you need to see a doctor to see if indeed you have the ulcer, and if you have, what caused the ulcer. Depending on the cause, the treatment may be different. Thus you need physician's evaluation and guidance for the treatment.

Acid blockers...: Ulcers are usually caused by either an infection with a bacterial called helicobacter pylori or NSAID drugs such eg. Aspirin, ibuprofen, motrin. Acid blockers eg. Pepcid, (famotidine) Prilosec are the drugs of choice for healing ulcers.  If you have an infection with h. Pylori then antibiotics are indicated.  Good luck!

Take a PPI...: Studies tell us that proton pump inhibitor drugs (ppi) e.g. Prilosec, Prevacid (lansoprazole) when taken concomitantly with anti-inflammatory medications or Aspirin will protect the stomach and reduce the risk of getting ulcers.

Stomach ulcer meds: Medications can be used to help treat stomach ulcers.  They are known as proton pump inhibitors (PPI).  These medications decrease the acid secretion of the stomach and given time will allow your body to heal the ulcers.  Some ulcers are caused by a certain bacteria (H. pylori) and certain medications are needed to treat this.
