More importantly, pink eye is a condition that does not respond to current medications because it is viral. There are some conditions that are similar, such as bacterial conjunctivitis and allergies.  These can be treated with medication prescribed by an eye doctor.

Optoms can do glasses and contacts but have limited eye health training.

Would be helpful: Optometrists go to a post college school which is 1/2 business and 1/2 basic eye disease and eyeglass/contact evaluation and care.  They do not get general medical training and are not truly doctors although they grant themselves a doctors degree.  Because of these deficiencies they do not currently take a board exam.  For the best eye care, see an ophthalmologist who has full training.

Not for optometrists: A person who might need glasses or contact lenses for nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia (needs reading glasses), but otherwise has no eye symptoms, can see an optometrist (a non-medical doctor). Healthtap in 2011 has only medical doctors as experts, so has ophthalmologists (medical eye doctors who do eye surgery, treat eye diseases, prescribe medications, etc...).

Ophthalmologist is a medical doctor completes 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school (all diseases/ treatments of the body), then an internship in medicine and surgery, treating patients, 3 years of ophthalmology residency learning medical / surgical treatment of eye disease then subspecialty.

First eye exam: The first eye exam should be performed around the age of three so that any correctable problems can be corrected well before school age.  It is best to have this initial exam performed by an ophthalmologist.  If something is noted at an earlier age it should be addressed at that time.  Usually newborns have their eyes examined prior to discharge.
